Malabsorption

Malabsorption is a condition that occurs as a result of an abnormality in the absorption of nutrients from food in the gastrointestinal tract. Malabsorption can be categorized into three groups: selective, partial, and total. The condition can lead to malnutrition and several types of anaemia.

Causes of intestinal malabsorption may include:

• Congenital or Acquired Reduction in Absorptive Surface
• Defects of Ion Transport
• Defects of Specific Hydrolysis
• Impaired Enterohepatic Circulation
• Mucosal Damage
• Pancreatic Insufficiency

Possible symptoms of malabsorption may include:

• Abdominal Discomfort
• Bleeding Tendencies
• Bloating
• Depression
• Diarrhea
• Flatulence
• Growth Retardation
• Muscle Cramps
• Poor Absorption of Water, Carbohydrates, and Electrolytes
• Steatorrhoea
• Swelling
• Weight Loss
