Emphysema

Emphysema is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is caused by exposure to toxic chemicals and tobacco smoke. Lung tissue loses elasticity and small airways may collapse during exhalation. This constricting of air passageways may result in impeded airflow and in severe cases, trapped air in the lungs.

Possible signs and symptoms of emphysema may include:

• Audible Wheezing
• Central Cyanosis
• Expanded Chest
• Finger Clubbing
• Metabolic Flap at the Wrist (Asterixis)
• Peripheral Edema
• Pursed-lipped Breathing
• Ruddy Complexion
• Shortness of breath
