Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, refers to chronic bronchitis and emphysema which are co-existing diseases of the lungs when the airways become narrowed. The disease is also known as chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD), chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD), chronic airflow limitation (CAL) and chronic obstructive respiratory disease.

COPD is commonly caused by smoking that leads to inflammatory responses in the lungs. Other causes include occupational exposures such as mining and welding, air pollution, and genetic susceptibility. COPD is diagnosed via a lung function test.

Possible symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may include:

• Shortness of Breath (dyspnea)
• Persistent Cough
• Sputum or Mucus Production
• Chest Tightness
• Tiredness
• Rapid Breathing Rate (Tachypnea)
• Wheezing
• Enlargement of the Chest
• Respiratory Failure
